Chapter 7

Lex's weight made the initial pull difficult, but Danny learned to keep her momentum going. Every step warmed her a little more, despite her skin being cold and snowflakes collecting on her shoulders.

She squinted ahead at the river as it widened, and the slopes leveled out into the low hills. Danny's legs grew weary of the hike through the nearly two feet of snow. But eventually, the small valley appeared, and she pinpointed the cabin as night settled over the mountains. The little puff of smoke curling up from the chimney was a hopeful sight. But she didn't have time to waste.

Come on, legs. Danny leaned forward and picked up the pace across the snowy field. Just a little further, and then we can rest.

Halfway to the cabin, Danny's legs shuddered under the strain, and she tripped, collapsing into the snow.

Danny growled at herself. Lex needs help. Get up, Danny.

She got her feet under her and straightened, gasping for air. Her hands were freezing and painful. But Silas would've liked to see her fail and quit. Her father never seemed to give her the credit she felt she deserved. With her last living parent fighting her on almost everything, Danny had withdrawn from society. She had to hide it when she helped others because Silas saw it as weak, and her father saw it as income loss.

Danny would find out soon enough if her faith in humanity was justified beneath it all. It had been a while since she’d been there.

She gritted her teeth and strained against the chain. The fender sled carrying Lex eased into motion again, bobbing and weaving over her tracks. Her entire body burned with exhaustion, and her lungs from the cold air.

Lex was dedicated to his job. He deserved to have someone fight for his life for once. And Danny really liked him. But she was near the end of her energy.

“Mr. Rustian? Henry?” Danny called out with all the energy left in her voice as she came within view of the windows.

A curtain swayed, and the back door unlocked.

“Danny? Is that you?” An older man stepped out into the snow toward her. “Dear Heavens, child! What happened?”

Relieved to see the older man rushing out to her, Danny dropped to her knees. “Semi hit my tow truck. Knocked us into Promise Canyon. Lex has a broken leg. Any chance you can get him to a hospital?”

Henry hooked a thumb over his shoulder. “Let me go grab my keys, and I’ll pull her around. You just wait right there.”

Danny thanked him and then turned around to check on Lex. “We’re going to get you to town.”

He reached a hand up to hers and took it. “Never been this guy before. Always been you. Thanks.”

Henry rode around the house a minute later in an old snowcat and stopped beside them. He hopped down and helped Danny lift Lex off the sled and lie down in the back of the vehicle. Danny climbed in after Lex and braced him for the journey into town.
